Where the prices come from

The cost guide contains nine advertised service prices from eight firms. Most cover London or the South East, with examples from North West England and Scotland. They do not establish a price for every part of the UK.

An older Checkatrade estimate is shown separately. Its cost table is dated May 2024, even though the article has a more recent headline. We have not treated it as a current contractor quote.

• The price is visible on the linked page.
• The service is named, such as an inspection or a homebuyer package.
• “From” prices and ranges stay labelled that way.
• VAT is included, excluded or clearly marked as unstated.
• Known limits, such as the number of pipes, covers or hours, stay beside the price.
• The area served and the date checked are shown.

Where a term is unclear, we tell you to confirm it with the firm. We do not fill in missing details.

These services are not identical, and the firms are not spread evenly across the UK. Averaging their prices would hide differences in the work, reports and areas covered.

A low price may be suitable for one job and unsuitable for another. Compare what you will receive and ask for a written total for your property.

Each example shows when we checked its source. Prices can change afterwards. We review flagged changes before updating the guide rather than changing figures automatically.
