Start with the result you need

Write down the decision behind the booking. Are you trying to understand a recurring blockage, obtain evidence for a house purchase, or check a drain before building work? Those jobs can need different deliverables. Ask the intended recipient what they need before paying for equipment.

DASA, for example, separates a basic inspection from a full package with a written report and footage. Even booking a professional does not mean every document is included. A hire receipt and a video file are not substitutes for a report someone has agreed to interpret.

Check the actual camera, not just the hire category

Hire catalogues contain different systems. HSS ProService lists several cable lengths and a recordable drain camera, alongside other inspection equipment. That is evidence of a range, not confirmation that a suitable unit is available near you.

Ask the hire company to confirm the model against your intended task and experience. Do not choose solely by advertised cable length: establish what the supplier says about pipe compatibility, bends, access, recording and any accessories. If you cannot describe the pipe or access safely, say so.

  • Which model is being supplied, and what information do you need to check suitability?
  • Can it record footage, and how do I retrieve and open the files?
  • What familiarisation, manuals and support are included?
  • Which accessories, batteries or recording media must be supplied separately?

Do not turn a hire booking into unsafe drain access

Do not enter a drain, sewer or chamber, or lean into an opening to retrieve equipment. HSE identifies serious confined-space hazards, including dangerous atmospheres and flooding. Hiring a camera does not make that work safe.

Leave cover lifting and drain access to a competent contractor. Tell the supplier about access uncertainties before collecting a camera. If inspection cannot be carried out safely, stop and arrange professional help; do not improvise an access method to make use of the hire period.

Compare the complete written scope

Request a written hire quote with the charging period and return deadline. Record the quoted total, VAT treatment and anything still unpriced. A deposit is different from a charge: ask when it is returned and what could be deducted.

Use the questions below to expose differences, not to assume every supplier charges every item. Then ask a survey contractor for a separate quote stating the inspection area and deliverables. Compare those two actual offers; this guide does not claim hire is cheaper.

  • Collection or delivery: included, charged separately, or unavailable?
  • Late return, cleaning and damage: which terms apply?
  • Consumables and optional protection: what is included and what can be declined?
  • Interpretation: who will explain any footage, and is that a separate service?

Plan what you will do with an incomplete result

Before booking, decide who you will contact if the equipment cannot reach the relevant section or the pictures are inconclusive. Ask a contractor whether they can review third-party footage before assuming they will accept it.

Label any files with the property, inspection date and what you actually know about the location. Do not call a pipe sound because one visible section looks clear. If your decision still needs a professional report, arrange that report rather than treating the cost already spent on hire as a reason to proceed.

Before booking drain camera hire

  • What decision must this inspection support?
  • Will the person using the findings accept hired-camera footage?
  • Has the hire supplier confirmed model suitability?
  • Who will provide safe access without entering a chamber?
  • What is the total, return deadline and deposit arrangement?
  • Who will interpret the result if it is unclear?

Common questions

Can I hire a drain camera instead of getting a homebuyer survey?

Ask your solicitor, surveyor or other intended recipient what evidence they need. Equipment hire alone does not include a professional condition report. Do not assume a video you record will meet their requirements.

Does a hire listing mean the camera is available locally?

No. Confirm the exact model, dates, collection or delivery arrangements and total with the hire provider. DrainSurveyCost does not hire out equipment or hold availability.
